i’m a year 6 teacher from bristol with a degree in english language who loves reading, writing and everything even vaguely creative! with that in mind, i’ve put together a list of some of the things that i do with my class to teach (or revise) word class. ‘i like your use of the verbs ___ and ____ but you might need a more interesting adverb than ____’; and thirdly, it means that their writing is more likely to be more grammatically correct (in my experience, at least!) give each child a piece of paper and tell them to write something (e.g. then, they pass it on to the next child and you tell them something different to write (e.g. here is an example of what it might look like: i saw this game on facebook last year and loved it; in fact, i got so carried away that i ordered a box of about 500 lolly sticks!for the spag ones, i typed them up so here are some examples of the word class kaboom set: spag-ticulate:one of my favourite games to play when i see my family is articulate (although i do get very competitive…!). i find that this game is good for getting a better understanding of the relationships between word classes and the subtle differences in meaning, e.g.
another way i often play this game is to display a card on the whiteboard and have one child standing with their back to it (who is trying to guess the word) while the rest of the class describe it. one way is to just give children the structure strip as follows to fill in with silly suggestions: adjective noun verb adverb another way is to get children to write down examples of each different word class on post it notes/ bits of paper and mix them up to create a silly sentence which they could then act out while other children guess what they’ve got written down. card sort: give a selection of cards (e.g. (if it is a verb, you can put the word ‘to’ in front of it) write a sentence using the word ‘park’ as a noun. (if it is a noun, you can put the words ‘a/an’ or ‘the’ in front of it) model sentences:there’s a game that i play with my class which they always enjoy. ‘he skipped past the lake because he wanted a fish.’ the actual content of the sentence doesn’t matter- the point is that they’re recognising the different word classes and applying their understanding. i’m a year 6 teacher in bristol with an english language degree who loves reading, writing and anything creative. i will be donating a book to your school after pay day!!
