here are some of the steps you should consider as you prepare your students to get started online. daniel says that the goal of learning should be to create knowledge that is durable, usable, and flexible: durable far beyond the length of your course; known well enough to be actually usable by students; and flexible enough that they can use it in new contexts. for example, you can create a five-question, short-answer quiz of key facts and skills that students need to know for the project (not multiple choice).
look for issues that need to be addressed in your local community, and explore ways that your students can talk to community members, over zoom or phone during the pandemic, about how the problem affects them. establishing rituals and routines helps you let students have the freedom to explore. you might ask students directly if they have access to all the materials they need, and adjust your project if they don’t. they are the crucial step in building durable, usable, and flexible learning.
on my campus (and i’m sure on many of yours) we are working on growing our blended learning practices. on my campus, our practice is to have students complete and keep up with a physical paper checklist to keep them on track as their to-do list — but what if we are completely online again? can we still teach in this style? i think we can. it is easy to create a checklist for students, but the hurdle is, if it is all online, how can we prevent students from accidentally moving/editing/messing up the content when they go to digitally “check things off”? i brainstormed several different ways – including making the checklist an image in the background in google slides – but then students wouldn’t be able to click on any links. if you coach students not to edit content and only click on links and drag in x’s when they are done with an activity, i think this idea could work! here’s how i did it (step by step directions below the animation): teachers, if you decide to use this template, you can update and adjust absolutely everything on the slide – it is all fully editable. even if you don’t think this checklist will be useful for your teaching, i hope you’ll be able to use the drag and drop stack tip!
after sharing this post, several people shared the idea of creating a similar checklist in google sheets. wonderful idea since you can add checkboxes that students can simply click to place a checkmark in! here’s my first attempt: if you’d like to use this template, or see it so that you can make something even better for your kids, click here for a copy! then all you do is click on the checkbox to make a checkmark appear! and you can still link to words as i described above by highlighting the words and pressing ctrl and k to open the link dialog box. keeping students organized is a huge hurdle when teaching in person, and it got even worse when we went digital. can you explain your intention for adding timers? i know that time management and visual timers can help, but i’m curious as to how you envision students using this ideally. her daily aspiration is to make a positive impact and to leave those she serves better off for having interacted with her.
