how to make conferencing on essays with 30 students manageable and effective—and the unexpected benefit conferences can bring. prior to meeting with my students, i quickly read their essays, making no marks on the papers and instead recording three things in my own notes: a score from the rubric i was using for the essay, one aspect of the writing task the student did well, and one aspect the student needed to work on. next i had students reflect on their papers with the targeted questions on this handout. i explained to students my expectations for the conferences, both for those who were conferencing with me and those who were working independently and awaiting their turn. while students worked on a long-term project that was due at the end of the week, i met with each one individually for five minutes. then the student would tell me what one aspect of their writing they wanted to work on in the conference.
i gave students a due date for submitting their revised essays, and we debriefed as a class about the conference process. in the past, i had always told students that i was available to talk with them about their writing outside of class time, but few followed through with this opportunity. because they had had the chance to experience the benefit of conferencing, they were willing to make the effort to meet with me on their own time. with individually targeted instruction, students were more likely to pay attention to and apply the ideas they learned from the conference. students were able to ask questions about writing that they were unable or unwilling to ask in front of the class. it seems obvious to me now, in retrospect, that talking with each of my students and listening individually to their needs would improve our relationships, but with the day-to-day demands that teachers face, it’s easy to forget the immense value of just a few minutes of connection.
and here’s the thing i think a lot of teachers tend to forget. initially, i do this at the beginning of the year and then sometimes once a week just to observe and note what my students are doing. it could be a simple list of students who all seem to be having the same difficulty. for example, if you notice that a student has difficulty staying on task most of the time, then your conference will be more about what his/her next steps need to be. you can have the student read aloud part of their writing to you. trust your teacher gut and use a checklist if you need to develop that teacher gut.
you can use this free template to help you with the structure of the conference and keep your teaching tight and focused. i also really like using this grid/calendar template because i can look at a glance and see which students i still need to meet with. it’s almost like a game because i want to fill up the grid with all my notes because that means i’ve met with all of my students and time to meet with them again. but you don’t want your conferences to be short and rushed so that you can meet with other students. what i will say is this: the more touchpoints and interactions you have with a student, the more of an impact you are making. i might have conferences at the table with other students, but they are right next to me and it is simply the zone of proximity that helps them stay focused and positive.
