data collection is a special education teacher’s life, so data sheets are the saving grace to making sure we have a simple, quick way to collect data while teaching, in the midst of a behavior, while on a field trip, when we are out sick… and everything in between. you and i both know that there are some data sheets you’re going to use more often than anything else. so why do i have two binders, one for originals and one for copies? not only that, when it comes time to getting a new data sheet out i don’t want to search for it inside the iep binder… i want to flip open another binder, grab a copy, and go!
i use velcro to attach clipboards to walls, like in the bathroom, in centers, on our door… that way i never forget to take data and the data sheet is accessible. when it comes to data sheets for special education… data sheets that i send home for parents to fill out for ieps or at the start of a new school year, or students are filling out interest surveys or transition paperwork, or if i need input from a service provider or the regular education teacher – i print these documents on colored paper. because when i writing an iep or looking back through a student’s folder, i will be able to find these documents quicker because they are on certain colors of paper (ie. no matter what special education classroom setting you teach in, or grade level, data sheets are and always will be a part of your teacher life. i’m a special education teacher, presenter, curriculum writer, and educational blogger behind mrs. d’s corner.
i feel ya. this sheet lets you easily fill in behaviors and criterias and print…. i keep these in the data binder and consult with a bcba on behavior goals weekly. i prefer to get in goal data at least once a week (taken by me!) i love how i can track 2 rounds or 2 weeks of data on one sheet too! i keep these in my iep data and do graphing once a month to check up on progress. i keep this multiple kid sheet on a clipboard in the bathroom- making less papers for me to have to flip through.
i am able to edit the criteria and write in the times of trips each day to develop the every changing schedule (and i don’t waste any paper because of changing criteria) i am also able to use it as a log and write in the times of requests… so many needs met with just one sheet. it is difficult to learn everything there is to know about a student that quick- but even if you could i like to assess the student for myself! i use a blank data sheet and write in behaviors to track as i see them. when you get a new student it’s also a good idea to assess them in all areas. i like how everything is clean and uniform- not a lot on the page- and easy to read… but what i like most of all is how simple it is to pop a new goal or criteria in each day. i keep the blank sheets in a file folder tucked away. at the end of each day, it is a paras job to take the sheets off of clipboards and sort them into student binders. then the para would take out a blank sheet and write the date, staff name, and student initials on top and place them ready to go for the next morning.
