it has been a while, well a while since i wrote a great entry here on the blog on doing a great lesson/project with your students. for those who don’t know, the starbooks cafe is when students get a “taste” of books to read. similar to a student ordering a drink from starbucks and enjoy a good read. these have ranged from teachers wrapping books in wrapping and serving a nice hot chocolate with it. being a business & technology teacher, i loved this idea and wanted to take it to a new level in my marketing class this semester. being my second year teaching marketing, i did a few changes, first was to change the name to: introduction to marketing, which is what the class really is, but one of my biggest changes was that i wanted classroom completely involved with the schools various departments and “real” marketing projects. i immediately had our librarians get me a list of books that would interest my classroom. the first part was borrow an idea that many students have used to introduced the starbooks cafe to students.
i then introduced students to tight by torrey maldondo, i had set up a spot in my classroom where i had keurig set up for hot chocolate, the book on display and a few sets of comic books that the main character reads in the book. a subway ticket and a punch card since the character was at starbucks a few times in the book. students were interested in reading the book, i even had a few students who looked up the book to either buy or check out at the library. for the most part, students loved creating their book trailers, but i still had students that did wait until the last minute to do their trailers, even with plenty of class time to work on them. i used both a patron survey and rubric for grading. it’s amazing seeing my students reactions when they see their posters on display and their peers and other regular library visitors checking out the book trailers and then checking out the books to read. the project was very successful and i hope to take it to another level next year. #appdice #tlap tech like a pirate, mobile instructional learning. creator of app dice for teachers and students and started the pixel classroom.
