liz tiley, director of adult education and evening programs, smith vocational adult community education (ace), 80 locust st., northampton years in business: smith school opened its doors to students 109 years ago, in 1908. the adult education program had 500 students attending night classes in the 1970s but was discontinued 25-30 years ago. what do you offer and to whom? culinary (farm-to-table and basic skills), dance, photography, repairs (auto, bike, homeowner, small engine), technology and welding are some of the recreational classes available. students range in age from teens to seniors. my goal is to create programs that address the workforce training needs of local businesses and offer community members a way to advance their careers, learn some new skills or just have fun.
