everyone wants to give their opinion on what is important for students and education in general. and can we talk for a minute about the shaming?!? i liken it to going into someone’s house and giving your unsolicited opinion on their decor or eating habits. and what i am about to share is my opinion of what i think are must-haves for the kindergarten classroom. (printable list is at end of this post…) now that i am off of my little soap box (j/k), i have been asked on multiple occasions for a list of items that i use in my kindergarten. i use the clipboards to display student work, as well as to use with the sensory table, write the room and when we do whole group on the carpet. i use these baskets for my student’s individual book bags. i really love these colored plastic oval carry totes from dollar tree. they make it super easy for my students to use as book bags and to carry from one part of the classroom to another.
i use cordless mini ‘mice’ or our classroom computers, so my students can easily manipulate and navigate with them. i used to think that any pencil would work, but after a few years of yucky broken pencils, i have planted my pencil-love flag on the side of ticonderoga. i always have tr-write and ‘fat’ pencils available for students who are still struggling. and i love to use the flashy pencils for special writing projects. and plain envelopes are for the writing station. i am a huge fan of astrobrights bright paper and cardstock! i also use colored and patterned duct tape for stapled spines of our writing journals. i use the jumbo clothespins for anchor chart hangers and magnets all around the room. i’m sure you have ideas and suggestions too.
depending on where you teach, you may get these supplies directly from your school. either way, here’s a list of what school supplies i would go through in a typical year so you can plan accordingly! as we learn how to use crayons and the colors, we move into our regular box of crayons. depending on your approach to glue, the above will get you through the year. it happens year after year so however many pencils we go through each year is not going to help you in your planning. some years we even transition to pens in the spring. paper is hard because most of the time i do print my own writing paper, but i do like to have this newsprint-type, thin writing paper on hand at all times. we write on the top and then you can illustrate it at the bottom.) so we go through them a lot!
i would say, we go through about 6-7 markers per child each year if i am not extremely careful in caring for them. i have yet to have a set plan for notebooks each year, but i like to have them stocked away because i know i will need them at some point. we love to use bingo dotters in the many lessons we get online! you need your own set of markers to use on chart paper. i usually start the year with 1 fresh box of markers, but they seriously would last me years if i was not such a smelly marker snob so i like to get a new set each year! i don’t even think i could estimate how much hand sanitzer we go through in kindergarten. this also depends on if you are hand sanitizing for lunch and restroom breaks instead of washing. all opinions are my own and shared honestly from free will and not as a part of any promotion. it is our goal to help busy teachers just like you to be the best teachers they can be through our classroom ideas, resources, and community. ~ jennifer join thousands of other teachers and stay on top of all things kindergarten.
