i’m 23, working in tech, and looking for a new career path. i have to say i loved the 2+ years i worked as an arborist but there are many drawbacks. if you do go for it make sure you work at a top notch company, a group of guys that love the work and are very experinced in pruning and climbing. that means you will be paid shit and do all the shit work but if you are a bright guy and know how to work hard you can earn repect and starting doing better, less grunt work fast. i work for a top notch company, there’s 8 of us who have years of experience and show up everyday, there a revolving door of about 5 spots for people who come and go constantly.
anyone can do it for a week or a year. it’s a strange and awesome career if you have the gumption and know how. there are situations where i stand somewhere on a leaning branch at 20m+ with a chainsaw, looking at the house below me that i am supposed not to crash with the wood i am about to cut off and i think to myself “why on earth do i do this?!” if you want to do this job for a long time and enjoy it. its a tough career man, be ready for physical labor and sometimes some sketchy situations. i did work for a professional company for a minute to get my training in the canopy and now i work for myself.
